The New Boeing 737 MAX 10 and certification concerns

Updated: Sep 28, 2022

Renton, Washington/Aviation News/July 26, 2022 (www.avionicsea.com/) The Boeing 737 MAX 10 incorporates the latest technology CFM International LEAP-1B engines,

Advanced Technology winglets, Boeing Sky Interior, large flight deck displays, and other improvements to deliver the highest efficiency.

The 737 MAX 10 is the largest version of Boeing 737 MAX airliner. Boeing launched its largest version of the 737 MAX designated as the MAX 10, to compete with the Airbus A321.

737 MAX vs A321 NEO

The 737 MAX 10 has similar capacity as the A321neo, 2.8 tons lighter, has lower fuel consumption and relatively long range. The proposed MAX 10 had a larger engine, strengthened wing, and telescoping undercarriage. It was reported that the 737 MAX 10 would be uncomplicated and low risk.

A321 NEO is the longer version of an A320. It’s about 146 feet long, competing with the MAX.

737 MAX 10 Specs

The 737 MAX 10 has two extra fuselage barrel sections forward and aft of the mid-section, with enhanced body outline to decrease the risk of tail strikes and similar capacity as the Airbus A321XLR, but with a shorter range and lower performance in smaller airports compared with its competitor. The 737 MAX 10 range of 3,300 nautical miles and a maximum cruise speed of 453 knots.

It can fly up to 41,000 feet and can climb at a rate of 3,000 feet per minute. The maximum payload is 18,778 kg while the maximum fuel capacity is 6,820 gallons.

Certification concerns

The alerting system in the 737 MAX 10 shares the traits in the earlier MAX planes and does not meet the new standards. Boeing has argued the benefit of the MAX 10's "commonality" with earlier versions of the jets, which enables pilots experienced in earlier version of the MAX to easily transition to the MAX 10.

The FAA warned Boeing that it may not receive certification for the 737 Max 10 by the end of this year. If certification does not get approval, it would have to add an alerting system to the Max 10's, unless it receives a waiver from the US Congress.

Boeing would have to redesign the Max 10's flight deck, and train pilots to fly under a new configuration, for the MAX. The US requirements were introduced after older version of 737 MAX were involved in fatal crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia, in which 346 people were killed. The older models of 737 MAX are back in the air, after Boeing enhance the 737 MAX MCAS system.
